A remarkable combination of humility and a passion for constant change is what fuels Julio Lucas\u2019 life. Despite being awarded “Photographer of the Year” at the prestigious 2014 iPhone Photography Award (IPPAwards), Lucas, who originally hails from Puerto Rico and now lives in Lakewood Ranch, refuses to rest on his laurels.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt first I didn\u2019t realize how important the competition is to so many people,\u201d he says, \u201cbut after seeing all the pictures that were submitted, I soon realized I had been part of a wonderfully talented, creative event.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI really don\u2019t consider myself a photographer,\u201d the 32-year-old Ringling College of Art graduate admits. \u201cI simply submitted my picture and forgot about it.\u201d<\/p>\n
The competition, which dates back to 2007 \u2013 the year of the iPhone\u2019s debut \u2013 invites artists to submit images captured on their iPhone, iPod, or iPad. It attracts thousands of artists from around the world, and the results are mesmerizing \u2013 as Lucas discovered when a simple e-mail eventually notified him of his success.<\/p>\n
Lucas is rarely without his iPhone (\u201cI\u2019ve used it when I was scuba diving\u201d), and considers its camera to be a blessing to those who understand how to manipulate its potential. Even for\u00a0those for who reach\u00a0the limit of their skill set with the beloved selfie.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat iPhones allow you to do is to capture moments in time that you couldn\u2019t necessarily capture with bigger, bulkier cameras,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s invasive, but in a good way. You can be in a public place and see an amazing moment \u2013 a beautiful setting that can be captured discreetly.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lucas\u2019 winning entry, taken at the Perito Moreno Glacier in the Santa Cruz province of Argentina, reflects his love of landscape photography.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou never know what you\u2019re going to discover in the landscape,\u201d he says. \u201cEverything is an adventure.\u201d<\/p>\n
Having traveled extensively throughout Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean, Lucas has spent the miles he has traveled honing his skills and his photographic philosophy.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery photo has a story,\u201d he explains. \u201cBut many people are never interested in that story. They just say, \u2018Oh, great photo. Where\u2019d you take it?\u2019 They never ask, \u2018How did you get to that place?\u2019”<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m an admirer of landscape photography more than portrait photography because landscape photographers will suffer to capture a perfect image. They\u2019ll camp out for days if necessary. That sense of adventure is more important to me than being stuck in a studio.\u201d<\/p>\n
Currently working for Tidewell Hospice, as its Director for New Media Communications, Lucas admits he\u2019s somewhat of a workaholic.<\/p>\n
\u201cI started up my own consultancy business, which became successful, but it grew to the point where I wasn\u2019t sleeping anymore \u2013 a big night would be five hours. So, over the last year, I\u2019ve returned to illustration, and it has been very relaxing.”<\/p>\n
And although Lucas considers illustration as his first love, his near-obsessive desire to capture the world about him through photography remains unabated.<\/p>\n
\u201cWinning the IPPAward has reignited a passion within me for photography that has lain\u00a0dormant for too long. But I\u2019m not necessarily looking for awards; I don\u2019t like to brag about what I\u2019ve achieved. I just want to feel confident showing people my work.\u201d<\/p>\n
